2024 is coming to an end, which also means that the holidays are here! After a busy year, it’s finally time to soak in all the holiday magic we can muster. But let’s face it: the holidays can also bring a fair bit of chaos. From jam-packed schedules to indulgent meals and winter weather challenges, staying balanced can feel like a holiday miracle in itself.
As someone who likes being prepared- especially before the rush and chaos of the season – I’ve put together a little Holiday Go-To Kit. This is a collection of essentials to consider having on hand before the chaos begins, so that we’re well equipped to handle all the fun to come!
Think of it as your survival guide to staying healthy, energized, and calm while soaking in all the holiday cheer.
So, grab your favorite nog of choice and let’s dive in!
1. Digestion Support
We know holidays come with overindulgences – it’s part of the celebration (and I personally accept this fact)! BUT – I don’t want to be bloated and uncomfortable, so these are two digestive supports that I always keep on hand:
Digestive Enzymes: A must-have for those irregularly heavy meals. These help your body break down food more efficiently, reducing bloating and discomfort. I typically buy ones that contain papain, an enzyme derived from papaya that’s wonderful in assisting with protein digestion.1
Nux Vomica Compose: Possibly one of my favourite homeopathic remedies from Boiron for indigestion and occasional stomach discomfort. Whenever I’ve “overindulged” (read with a wink) in food or drink, this is my go-to and is a staple over the holidays.*
I recommend as a Pro Tip: Take digestive enzymes right before bigger holiday meals and Nux Vomica when you notice discomfort setting in.
2. Immune Support
The colder months, combined with crowded gatherings, can test your immune system. I always keep these two homeopathics in my cupboard come winter (and am SO happy I did when the time comes to grab them…)
Oscillococcinum: My go-to for when I feel the first twinge of what might be the flu or feel like something’s not quite right (I’m sure you know the feeling!). Boiron’s Oscillococcinum is a homeopathic medicine for flu-like symptoms such as aches, headaches, and chills. It helps reduce symptom duration without causing drowsiness or sleeplessness, making it great for the whole family—adults, kids, and even infants.*
Stodal® Multi-Symptom: Should I happen to catch something, I am always very happy my past-self decided to stock the cupboard with Stodal® Multi-Symptom, a homeopathic syrup used for the relief of cold symptoms like nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing minor sore throat, dry or wet cough and chest congestion.*-**
3. Stress Support
The holidays are full of joy, but they can also be overwhelming. With that in mind – a holiday go-to kit always benefits from a couple stress management remedies:
Passiflora Compose: from Boiron, this is one of my favourite homeopathic blends if you’re dealing with stress, nervousness, restlessness and insomnia.*
Lavender Essential Oil: This is a classic that deserves to be a staple. Lavender is renowned for its calming properties and has been studied for its ability to significantly reduce anxiety levels.2 Whether you use a diffuser, or simply place a few drops on your pillow after a family-filled night, lavender deserves a place in your stress support plan!
4. Hydration Support
Between festive drinks, late nights and more food than normal – it’s important to remember to hydrate! Here are two options I add to my water, particularly after a night of holiday fun.
Electrolyte Powder: Perfect for rehydrating after a busy day or night of holiday indulgence. My preference are those that are sweetened with stevia, not artificial sweeteners or sugar.
Himalayan Sea Salt: My favorite hydration hack! A pinch of Himalayan sea salt in your water adds natural electrolytes to help your body stay balanced and energized.
5. Light Therapy Box
I couldn’t NOT include this. The holidays also mean that we’re getting into the darkest days of the year, and for many of us, that lack of sunlight can seriously affect our energy, mood, and focus. A light therapy box is a game-changer, especially for combating the winter blues or seasonal affective disorder.3 Using a light therapy box for just 20-30 minutes a day (in the morning, as close to waking up as possible) is a great preventative measure to keep your mood bright this holiday season.
Final Thoughts
First and foremost – I hope you congratulate yourself for getting through another year and take time to celebrate yourself this holiday season. And with a little preparation, and maybe a holiday go-to kit of your own – I hope you’re able to handle whatever the season throws your way!!
You’ve got this. Happy Holidays!
